Mac users have it rough. You get some of the best hardware on the market with super polished, stable software, yet so few games to play on it. But just because most developers aren't releasing their games for macOS doesn't mean you can't get PC games running on your Apple-made machine. It just takes a bit of finesse.
Some new more games added in the Portingkit!

Okay, so you've exhausted all the Mac-compatible games in popular stores, and you're ready to tinker in order to get some other games running. Some Windows-only titles may run on macOS through Wine(Opens in a new window), a compatibility layer for Mac and Linux systems designed to run Windows programs. Wine itself can get rather technical to set up, especially when it comes to games, but there are a few third-party tools that make things easier.
While Porting Kit is the easiest and most up-to-date tool for installing games with Wine, other programs aim to do something similar, like PlayOnMac(Opens in a new window) or the $60 CrossOver(Opens in a new window). Some may work better with certain games, so your best bet is to search for "the best way to get [the game you want] running on a Mac." To browse Wine-friendly games before you buy, check out the Wine Database(Opens in a new window) alongside Porting Kit's library to get a feel for what might work on your system.
If all those options sound a little too cumbersome, there's one more method that's far more plug-and-play: cloud streaming. Services like Nvidia GeForce Now and Xbox Cloud Gaming allow you to play games on a number of different devices, including your phone, tablet, PC, or Mac. Each is set up a bit differently.
GeForce Now has a free option that includes some wait time before you can play a one-hour session, with a $10-per-month plan that eschews these limits and improves graphical fidelity. You can play games you already own, but only those supported by GeForce Now.
Stutters and performance can often be fixed by using a more up to date version of DXVK and MoltenVK than the one included in default CrossOver. This has a dramatic effect on many games including God of War (2018), The Witcher 3, Star Wars: Battlefront II. However, it can also cause instability in games like Battlefield 1. See this tutorial:
Steam overlay is part of Steam preferences and some games launches through Steam can display the game's framerate. However many games run through Steam do not necessarily correctly launch the Steam overlay.
How do I force my monitor to display a full-screen 4:3 picture with black bars on the two sides, rather than stretched? Again, the program I am using, "Porting Kit" by some guy named "Paul the Tall", doesn't appear to have any "play in windowed" mode feature. There appears to be a "AOE rise of rome unofficial HD patch" (also installed via Porting kit) made by yet another person that allows windowed mode, as well as widescreen resolution support. (edit update: for some reason, windowed mode using this patch crashes the game for me, but full screen mode works, and it allows playing the game in 1920 x 1080 resolution, so technically this is fine. However, I was wondering if there is a more general solution to this problem that can work for other full-screen 4:3 stretched games)
Many of the Win95 games won't run on recent Windows versions, but you can install Win95 in DOSBox. The procedure is a bit complicated, hopefully dada_ and some folks over Vogons and #dosbox@freenode set up a guide to do this, check it out in the Google doc.
Some will work perfectly, some won't. We rarely have all the resources necessary to get these games to install and then be played. You may have to look over the web for a x64 setup file or fixed exe file. If you find a good tutorial, please post the URL in the comment or drop us a message.
Hopefully, 3dfx can be emulated nowadays using nGlide, a free 3Dfx Voodoo Glide wrapper made by Zeus Software. Very easy to use, just install and play for most games, but you should visit the compatibility page, as many games require a patch or some tweaking.
Meanwhile, the gaming industry skyrocketed, mainly on PCs, which made it easy for people to build powerful computers to take full advantage of all the latest games and then update those computers with even more processing power, RAM, and new video cards to keep up with the gaming evolution.
Yes! With the release of macOS 13 Ventura in 2022, more and more gamers say a Mac can actually be a great gaming machine, among other things. This is due to the release of Metal 3, an advanced graphics framework that will enable a Mac to run high-end games with ease. Amazing news for Mac users and game devs!

Updated November 16th, 2021 by Russ Boswell: Minecraft Dungeons has been a blast for a lot of players, giving them a top-down race through complex dungeons filled with enemies but there are a lot of great releases out there that offer the same, if not more, entertainment. There are a lot of great games like Minecraft Dungeons available, with some of them even being free-to-play releases. To give players a better look at some of the best games on the market like Minecraft Dungeons, the following list has been updated with even more choices.
The game builds on the original by adding a host of new features, such as day/night cycles, weather effects, a new UI, and more. Additionally, some returning features have been improved upon, such as fishing and pets. The game features both single-player and multiplayer and is available for PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.
Riverbond offers very similar dungeon crawling gameplay as Minecraft Dungeons, to the point where it shares the same quest objectives such as "destroy the banquet" in some of the levels. The visual style is also very similar to Minecraft Dungeons with its voxel design, but the gameplay is far more forgiving as players have unlimited lives, which ultimately makes dying inconsequential.
